One of the most common and consequential errors in mineral formulation is confusing the amount of a compound with the amount of the nutrient. 500 mg of magnesium oxide is not 500 mg of magnesium — it's the oxide, of which only a fraction is elemental magnesium. The compound is not the nutrient

Minerals are delivered as compounds — oxides, citrates, bisglycinates, carbonates — and each compound is only partly the elemental mineral the body and the label care about. The elemental fraction differs by compound: magnesium oxide is a high percentage magnesium, magnesium bisglycinate a much lower one. So the amount of the salt and the amount of the mineral are different numbers, related by a conversion factor specific to the form.

Why hand calculation goes wrong

The error happens when someone doses or declares the compound amount as if it were the elemental amount — or applies the wrong conversion factor. The result is a product that delivers far less (or more) of the mineral than intended, a label that's wrong, and possibly a claim that no longer qualifies. Because the factors are form-specific and not intuitive, this is exactly the kind of thing done wrong by hand.

The factor lives on the ingredient

The fix is to hold the elemental fraction as data on each mineral ingredient — the specific compound and its conversion factor. Then the software computes the elemental contribution automatically from the amount used: enter the salt, get the elemental mineral. Dosing to a target elemental amount, and declaring the elemental amount, both flow from the same correct factor.

Elemental content isn't an isolated calculation — it feeds the dose you design to, the amount you declare, the %NRV, and whether a claim's threshold is met. Computing it correctly from the form is what makes all of those right together. And it pairs with the permitted-form check: the same form data that confirms the compound is allowed also gives its elemental fraction.
