Some actives do not survive the stomach, and some stomachs do not enjoy the actives. Delayed-release and time-release capsules exist for both reasons: acid-resistant shells and enteric systems that carry probiotics, enzymes and irritating compounds past the acid bath, or spread an active's release over hours. The protection is real engineering — and it adds a layer to the formula that has to be specified as carefully as the actives themselves.
The shell is a functional ingredient
In a standard capsule the shell is mostly a container. In a delayed-release product, the shell or coating is the mechanism: cellulose-based acid-resistant capsules, enteric polymer coatings, or beadlets with their own coating systems. Each option is a real ingredient with composition, supplier specification, suitability profile (vegetarian, vegan, religious certification) and cost — and the choice changes what the product is. Why protect: the actives that need it

The capsule supplier's disintegration data, in-vitro acid-resistance studies, your own testing: linking the release claim to its evidence at the formula level makes the promise auditable and keeps marketing from outrunning the technology.
Suitability flows through the coating
Coating systems and shell materials decide vegetarian and vegan status as much as the fill does. A formula system that rolls suitability up from every component — fill, shell, coating, beadlet — answers the "is it vegan?" question from data, and flags the coating that silently breaks the claim before it is designed in.
Cost and the protected premium
Protected formats cost more — specialty shells and coating processes carry real prices — and command more. Holding the release system's cost explicitly in the formula makes the premium a calculated margin rather than a hopeful one.
