A supplement's BOM has to satisfy two very different audiences. Production wants to know what to weigh, buy, and assemble — the manufacturing view. Compliance wants to know what's declared, whether levels are within limits, what allergens and claims apply — the regulatory view. These care about different things, and a common failure is keeping two separate versions that drift apart. The better answer is one structured BOM that serves both. Here's how the two jobs relate.
The manufacturing view
For production, the BOM is about making the product: the input quantities (overage included), the ingredient forms to purchase, the batch quantities, the order of addition, the packaging. It answers “what do we weigh, buy, and assemble to produce this?” The manufacturing view cares about the real, physical inputs — the amounts that actually go into the mixer.
The compliance view
For compliance, the same BOM is about what the product is and claims: the declared nutrient amounts (label values, not input amounts), the %NRV, the allergens, the elemental content, whether levels are within market limits, which claims are supported. It answers “is this product legal, and what does its label say?” The compliance view cares about the declared, regulated properties — derived from, but not identical to, the manufacturing inputs.
Where they differ — and why two versions drift
The two views differ in important ways. The manufacturing amount includes overage; the compliance amount is the declared value. The manufacturing view lists a compound; the compliance view cares about the elemental nutrient. Keep these as two separate documents — a production BOM and a regulatory dossier — and they drift: a reformulation updates one and not the other, and now your label describes a product you're not making. Two versions is two sources of truth, which is no source of truth.
