
NRV vs Daily Value vs RDI: nutrient reference values across global markets

A multivitamin contains the same amount of vitamin C whether it is sold in Berlin, Boston, or Dubai. Yet the percentage printed next to that vitamin C will differ depending on the market. The reason is reference values — and misunderstanding them is one of the most common labeling errors in global supplement sales.
What a reference value is
A nutrient reference value is a benchmark amount of a nutrient, used to express how much of that benchmark a serving of the product provides. When a label says a serving delivers "100% NRV" of vitamin C, it means the serving provides the full reference amount used in that market.
The reference value is the denominator in the percentage. Change the reference value, and the percentage changes — even though the actual amount of nutrient is identical.
The main systems you will meet
NRV (Nutrient Reference Value) is the term used in the EU. Supplement and food labels express vitamin and mineral content as a percentage of the NRV.
Daily Value (DV) is the US system, used on the Supplement Facts and Nutrition Facts panels. It has its own set of reference figures, which have been updated in recent years.
RDI (Reference Daily Intake) and related terms appear in various markets and historical contexts, sometimes underpinning the percentages, sometimes used interchangeably in conversation.

Why the percentages differ
Here is the crucial point: the reference value for a given nutrient is not always the same number across systems. The EU NRV for a vitamin and the US Daily Value for that same vitamin can differ.
When the reference figure differs, the percentage on the label differs — for the exact same quantity of nutrient. A serving providing a fixed amount of a vitamin might show one percentage under the EU NRV and a different percentage under the US DV.
This is why you cannot copy the percentage from one market's label onto another's. The amount carries over; the percentage does not.
Where this trips manufacturers up
The error is almost always the same: a label is adapted from one market to another, the nutrient amounts are kept (correctly), but the percentages are carried over too (incorrectly). The result is a label that misstates the contribution relative to the destination market's reference value.
It is an easy mistake because the numbers look right — the amounts are correct, and the percentages were correct, just for the wrong market.
The connection to claims
Reference values are not only a labeling-display issue. In the EU, the eligibility for certain claims is tied to providing a significant amount of a nutrient — often defined relative to its reference value. So the reference value feeds into both how content is displayed and which claims a product qualifies for.
Get the reference value framework right and two things fall into place at once: correct percentages and correct claim eligibility.
Handling it across markets
The reliable approach is to store the actual nutrient amounts in the formula — the physical quantities, which never change — and apply the correct reference values per market when generating each label. The amount is the constant; the percentage is computed for the destination market using that market's reference figures.
When labels are generated this way, the same formula produces a correct EU label and a correct US label without anyone manually converting percentages.
