Choosing supplement formulation software: a buyer's checklist

Check the calculations it does automatically

The point of formulation software is that the formula drives the numbers. Verify that the following are calculated automatically from the formula, not entered separately:

Nutrient totals and elemental amounts per serving. Percentages of the relevant reference values for each target market. Allergen roll-up across all ingredients including excipients. Contaminant load across the formula. Cost per unit and per batch.

Red flag: if changing a dose does not instantly update the label preview, the percentages, and the cost, the tool is not connecting the formula to its outputs — which is the whole value.

Examine the compliance engine

This is where generic tools fall away. Supplement compliance is specific: permitted forms of nutrients, maximum levels that differ by market, authorised claims, novel-food status. A real platform encodes these rules and checks your formula against them.

Test the document generation

A major reason to buy formulation software is to stop hand-building documents. The system should generate labels, specification sheets, and certificates of analysis from the formula data, in the formats your markets and customers expect.

Ask in the demo: generate a label and a spec sheet from this formula in front of me. Then change the formula and regenerate. If the documents update to match automatically, that is the behaviour you want. If they are static files you edit separately, the drift problem remains.

Consider multi-format support

Supplements come in many formats — capsules, softgels, tablets, gummies, powders, beverages — and each has its own formulation logic. A gummy is not a capsule with a different shape. Check that the tool handles the formats you make on their own terms, including per-piece dosing, overage, and matrix considerations where relevant.
